Dr. A. Ramunni – From the immune balance to microcirculation: the versatility of Double Filtration Plasmapheresis

Since the introduction of advanced plasma filtration membranes, nephrologists have expanded their expertise in extracorporeal blood purification to include therapeutic apheresis procedures. Starting from conventional plasmapheresis, these techniques have evolved in parallel with our growing understanding of pathogenic molecules involved in disease. Among them, double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) represents a natural progression. It uses a cascade filtration system with multiple filters of different permeability, allowing selective removal of targeted pathogenic substances. DFPP offers remarkable flexibility and can be applied to a wide range of conditions, including lipid disorders, immune-mediated diseases, and microcirculatory dysfunctions.
